Special Ed Returns To San Antonio

I've not been to San Antonio in a really long time. To be honest, the last time was not a very good experience. the Riverwalk was kind of busted, there were tons of sketchy people, and it generally wasn't a very good time. Last month however, I had to go back there for work. I was pleasantly surprised by how much the city has changed.

I flew into the city relatively early and caught an Uber over to the Omni Hotel. I'd never heard of the chain and did not know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by the opulence of the hotel. I requested a high floor and was put on the 18th, with a bumpout above the lower floors. The view was fantastic and I got to spend a few hours decompressing from the travel and getting ready for the night.

I met all of my other work peeps in the lobby and hopped on the bus downtown. We had a private charter and the driver was worthless. At one point, he was asking us for directions to the restaurant that we were doing our group dinner at. Regardless, we got to the Rio Rio Cantina and settled in for a great meal. The food was great, especially the chips and queso. After a few hours of networking, we were released to do what we pleased. I headed out solo, checked out the Alamo, stopped in at Pat O'Briens, and then headed back to the hotel. It was a long day and I was looking forward to getting some sleep.

Wednesday was a long day. I was up at 6am to make the 7am breakfast. I was in meetings all day, really connecting with the new work peeps that I am supporting. I'm lucky to have a strong group this year. During the day, I dipped out slightly to move hotels to the Homewood Suites nest door. I'm now a Hilton guy and staying over there made sense financially and personally. After the all day meeting, we once again piled on a bus and headed downtown.

Wednesday night's dinner was at the Tower Of The Americas. It was built for a World's Fair and has remained intact ever since. We were originally told that the top rotated, but that was not the case. The dinner was fantastic and I continued to work on my fears, walking around the exterior and taking pictures of the city. After a few hours, we headed back to the hotel, hanging in he lobby for another hour before calling it a night.

Tuesday was another long day with me getting up again at 6am. I grabbed breakfast with the group and made my way into the meeting. It was another successful day and went by pretty quickly. The meeting broke around 4pm so that we could all catch out flights. I caught a ride to the airport and met up with some of the other late departure group. We had a few drinks, grabbed dinner, and then I hopped on a flight back to Phoenix.

Overall, it was a great trip. I spent a few days with some great people, saw some cool new sights, and saw how much San Antonio has changed.
